Some of whom are still with us & have drivers competing for them & some who have left their mark on racing with their individual contributions to the way Drag Racing is today.

Detroit Dragway-Legends of the 1960's : Detroit Dragway Legends in their own time, setting landmark records, thrilling the masses with their drive for speed. Detroit Dragway had some of the greatest names in drag racing that became known for their major contributions in drag racing history: Connie Kalitta set the 1st official record for going 200 mph & has developed his name, Kalitta Motorsports, into one of the most innovative, technical engineering, names in the Nitro, Full Throttle, Mopar & Funny Car drag racing community. Although the Greek & a few other race car drivers that started racing before Detroit Dragway ever existed, will dispute who was the actual first to break the 200 mph barrier, I'm sure a few of the top ten did it before it was ever officially recorded. Kalitta chose the name the "Bounty Hunter" because of his passion to win & check off each of the racers whose names he once had listed on the side of one of his dragsters, Don Nicholson became synonymous with the dynamometer fondly known "Dyno" Don Nicholson, Don Garlits Speed Shop became the "Swamp Rat" by the suggestion of a friend that knew Don as a skinny kid from the Florida swamps, Chris Karamesines, being of Greek descent, became known as the "Golden Greek" Al Bergler, who also built his machines from scratch, is pictured here in a dragster coupe named "More Aggravation", won the very 1st Riddler Award with later fame of the "Motown Shaker" & some others, well remembered that Joe Stevens captured on professional film are included among this collection such as the Logghe Brothers, Poncho Rendez, Dick Harrell, the Ramchargers, Arnie "the Farmer" Beswick and Della Woods, are just some of the drag racing legends who left their mark on Detroit Dragway history. Detroit Dragway over 200 Pictures 1959-1971 : Detroit Dragway opened in 1959 in the middle of a farm area in a rural city about 25 miles south of Detroit. It was instantly a hit with crowds filling the bleachers or milling around the pits. The close, friendly atmosphere became a family for many and a perfect opportunity to try out new automotive creations in racing and finally a legal place to do it. Before the strip opened, competition for the fastest car would take place in that same area's back roads and at the time, another popular place to race was Woodward Avenue. This gallery, from the original negatives taken by Professional Sports Photographer, Joe Stevens, shows those people and their race cars from that decade, the 1960's, of the front engine dragsters, gassers, funny cars, street rods, stock cars, dealership sponsored race cars, local corner engine shop or garage creations, from self made, custom to altered, modified, kits, inventions of the early days of racing. Chris Karamesines Golden Greek 1960 : The "Golden Greek" named his front engined dragster the "Chisler" around 1959 or 1960 & competed against Don Garlits & other "Top Ten" drivers from 1959 on. Detroit Dragway was the spawning grounds for these competitive young men at that time. To stay in the "Top Ten", they would have to stay ahead of the new challengers that wanted to gain that esteemed spot. Challengers would have to beat such drivers as Karamesines, Garlits, Kalitta, Postorian & the others & in those days these drivers were unbeatable. It took ambition, knowlege, endurance & a fast car to get there. Looking back some 60 years now, it's obvious why drivers such as Chris Karamesines held his esteeemed position because he had all of those qualities & to prove that, he is still racing the "Chisler" all these years later. Drag Racing has been his life and his passion. Chris Karamesines was inducted into the Drag Racing Hall of Fame & here in Detroit, his & all of those Top Ten drivers stats are on display at the Detrolit Science Institute.

1968/70 Chicago Autorama Photos : This Gallery features the show cars, race cars & muscle cars that depicted that era and the classic cars that were old then and almost 50 years older today. I'd like to think all of those classics are still in good shape but that would depend on who's hands they got into and if they took care of them or left them in a garage or barn somewhere. But the trend in the last few years has been to restore most of these cars and it is with photos like these that help to recreate the authenticity of the look. I hope in some way I am helping by bringing these old pictures to life through sales and referrals.

1970 Lightguard Armory & Arnie Beswick : The Lightguard Armory by Greenfield Rd. by Detroit homed many a car show. This one in 1970 features several poses of Arnie "The Farmer" Beswick, one shot with Dick Harrell's Camaros, Color Me Gone, Logghe's & several other classic cars were there in the background. But Arnie Beswick was one of the most popular race car drivers at that time known for his love for speed & racing and his showmanship, giving the fans their monies worth. He's still racing today at age 80 with a car that came before this GTO, the Tameless Tiger. I've met Arnie and have seen him race and he's is a great guy, friendly & amusing & still puts on a show that leaves fans jumping out of their seats. These pictures are classics. Great for getting autographs, collecting one of a kind and displaying in your own favorite place.

1960/70s Detroit Auto Show Concept Cars & "WOMEN MODELS" : Vintage Photography of the Detroit Internaltional Auto Show from the 1960's and 1970. of these beautiful models sharing their higly skilled knowledge of the NEW FACTORY AUTOMOBILES of their time, that guests of the show will be buying at some point. The models use their brains and beauty also to enhance guests interest in new CONCEPT CARS too. Perhaps I'll add some of the the new car show models to show the difference in their clothes. I'm working on something else for a while first. Thank you for looking in!!! Ok! I've added the 2011 Detroit International Auto Show Models and there is a differnce in their clothese but, I also snuck in a few male models that they're using now. They're not as pretty but there were a few that weren't too bad. They're more flattered when I wanted to take their picture as I told all of the models, women & the few men why I wanted their picture. Because my father was a photog and used to photograph the models and was digitizing the pics and wanted to add some from his daughter. They all thought it was really cool. One of the differences is that I tried to get most of the car in the shot but as you can see, he was more interested in the models. Pretty funny.

George Barris Kustoms & Famous Show Cars : Remember such TV and Movie cars from the 1960's & on such as the Munster Coach and the Batmobile? George Barris began building show cars even way before that, building on his experience through the years to ultimately put him in a class with Gene Winfield and some other builders that are randomly shown throughout our other galleries of car shows . Mr. George Barris is an icon whoes work will live on forever. His creations have brought much joy, laughter and good times to many an event or show that called upon his expert & unique abilities. I personally have not met him but I know somebody who is good friends with George and from what he has told me and from videos and photos I've seen of him and things I've read, Mr. Barris is quite a charming and fun indivdual who is a real go getter from an era of pioneers. This gallery features photos of Barris Kustom cars that he has hauled across the states from car show to car show, mainly the major city Autorama's for over 40 years. Some of the cars he has merely purchased for his collection but oh what a collection it has been. These are photos of just a few that were on display in the Detroit area in the 1960's.

Boblo Boat & Boblo Island Photographs : Boblo Boat & Bob-lo Island Photos bring us all back to those sunny summer days when a one hour cruise along the Detroit River in a big steam ship was the beginning of a real life fantasy that could take you as far as a child's imagination could go. I remember the breeze blowing thru my hair, the smell of popcorn & cotton candy, running up & down the stairs to the dance floor or to the top of the ship where you were usually the only ones up there besides the Captain who sat behind the wheel. We'd look up as we went under the Ambassador Bridge, we'd wave at the boats passing by until we'd pull up to the foot of Woodward boat dock. These are just some of the images you'll find here along with some great, rare, photos of the Boblo Island Amusement Park rides. All of these photos are for sale. Womans History : This gallery is dedicated to Women's History that my father caught on film in his almost 50 years of Phtography such as Shirley Muldowney, Della Woods, Miss Hurst, Judy Garland, Ann Marston & Miss America. Shirley Muldowney will always be remembered as one of the 1st women drivers in drag racing along with Della Woods & also in one of these photo's is Linda Vaughn as Miss Hurst who was synonimous with the race track. Judy Garland, of course, was legendary in her own time from her timeless movie, "Wizard of Oz" shown here in later years in the Detroit area along with a few photos of 1960's Miss America's. In the years 1954,55,57 & 58 Ann Marston was National Free Style Field Champion in Archery and also in 1959, Ann won the Miss Michigan contest and participated in the Miss America pageant using archery to win in the talent division of the contests. And just this August, 2011, Shirley Muldowney had an entire section of seating at the Indy National's strip, named after her to honor her huge contribution to Drag Racing history but also, in my opinion, to celebrate her outgoing personality through the years & how she is loved by so many Drag Racing Fans.

Detroit Black History in Photos : Some features in this February gallery are Olympic Torch Runner in Detroit in 1963 where HAYES JONES came to light the Torch only to find picketers lining the streets because the Olympic Committee had been considering holding the Olympics in Detroit and Detroiters were concerned about housing problems and segregation and a group was holding signs to boycott the Olympics. Hayes Jones, the Olympic Hurdler was focused on his running career in the Olympics and found the situation to be quite disheartening. Detroit Dragway & Wonderland Park Aerial Photos 1960 : Detroit Dragway & Wonderland Park Aerial Photos1960. Detroit Dragway was shaped like a horse shoe & I've described the photos so you'll know what to look for. Wonderland Park was in Southgate, MI not too far from Detroit Dragway, only a few miles away. Wonderland Park was a small Amusement Park located right in the middle of the city all summer long. Of course Southgate wasn't as built up in that area like it is today. You'll see the old Fort George Drive Inn too. Wonderland Park Southgate, MI : These are some great Aerial Photographs of the once very popular Wonderland Park in Southgate, Michigan that used to be tucked in right at the corner of Fort St. and Pennsylvania Rd. on the little short cut that took you down behind Montgomery Wards called Trenton Rd. Here you can see very clearly, in 1959, the rides that all of us from the downriver Detroit area used to take for granted. All summer long, any time at all, you could come and spend hours on the rides that made up a day of fun and summer dreams No longer there now, close to where Southgate Auto Dealership still is, is the Park & further on down Fort St., the Fort George Drive Inn.where families came together to see movies from Bettie Davis' "Sweet Baby Jane" to "John Travolta in "Urband Cowboy". Those were the days when you'd pull up just right so that your dashboard didn't block the movie screen & then get the speaker to hang in your window & adjust the volume so everybody in the car could hear it. You'd go in while it was still light outside & the kids would run up to the front under the movie screen and play on the rides while Mom & Dad would organize the snacks, blankets & pillows. Also in this group of aerial photos is a horseshoe view of Detroit Dragway the very 1st year it opened. If you read the description under the photo's, which identify the old landmarks of the area you'll also see the expressway, I-75, as it was still being built to go downtown Detroit. In these pics, it stops at Sibley & Dix, right next to Detroit Dragway. Now that same expressway goes all through Michigan. But I remember driving downtown Detroit to go to the Bob-lo Boat Dock or to the Detroit Auto Show with my Dad before the expressway was built & he would take Jefferson Ave. all the way down along the Detroit River & Lake Erie down to where the red cobble stone road was still in tact behind Cobo Hall.
